Cllr Ken Glynn wants traffic calming measures installed on the approaches to the pedestrian crossing at Marshall's.

Green Road crossing not dangerous says council

The council shouldn’t wait until there is a serious accident to improve road safety at the pedestrian crossing on the Green Road outside Marshalls Supermarket.

That’s the verdict of Cllr Ken Glynn, who has called on the local authority to install traffic calming measures on both approaches to the pedestrian crossing.

Speaking at the April meeting of the Mullingar Municipal District (MMD), the Fianna Fáil man said that he knew of three or four locals who have had near misses at the crossing recently.

He called on the MMD to improve road safety by installing ramps or anti-skid surfaces.

Martin Murray, director of services at the MMD, told Cllr Glynn that there was no accident history at the crossing. Mr Murray added that road markings are in good condition and that additional flood lights and flashing beacons had been fitted recently.

Cllr Glynn said that he has been told by people working in the vicinity that cars “bulldoze” their way through the crossing and that there are near misses on a “daily occurrence”.

He also urged the MMD not to wait until there is a serious accident to improve road safety.

Cllr Sorca Clarke voiced her support for Cllr Glynn. She said that the crossing is located on an extremely busy road that has a constant flow of traffic.
She also noted that there is already a sign for a speed ramp on the approach to the crossing.
Mr Murray said that although the MMD does not propose to carry out any works, the council would carry out a road safety audit, not on the crossing but the general “urban setting”.
