Constituency Commission deadline next week

The deadline for submissions on boundaries to the Constituency Commission is next week.

A petition has been launched calling for north Westmeath to be reunited with the rest of the county for general election purposes.

The North Westmeath Historical Society is behind the petition, and aims to lodge it with the Constituency Commission by the January 10 deadline for submissions on boundaries.

The decision to transfer the north eastern portion of Westmeath to the newly-created three-seat constituency of Meath West was made following the 2002 general election.

The remainder of Westmeath and the whole of Longford are together as the Longford Westmeath constituency.

The electoral divisions from Westmeath that became part of the new Meath East constituency were:

Ballinlough, Ballyhealy, Ballynaskeagh, Bracklyn, Clonarney, Collinstown, Copper Alley, Delvin, Faughalstown, Fore East, Fore West, Hilltown, Kilcumney, Killua, Killulagh, Kilpatrick, Kinturk, Rosmead and Riverdale.
