Enhancements to greenway 'under review'

Mullingar Municipal District

Greenway crossing

Cllr Sorca Clarke called for a pedestrian crossing be provided at the entrance to the Greenway at Newbrook Roundabout to facilitate safer crossing of pedestrians to the car park.

The councillor was informed that enhancements to the existing greenway and Old Rail Trail are under review, and this review includes improving the entry points.

“Subject to funding, Mullingar Municipal District has identified this entry point as a priority in advancing specific improvements in this location.”

Canal lights

Cllr Bill Collentine ask Mullingar Municipal District to repair lights on canal from Carey Bridge to Harbour Street Bridge, saying the location is used by numerous walkers and joggers.

He was told that Electric Skyline have visited this site and have agreed to keep the lights on 24/7 until next week and will fix the problem early next week.

Cllr Collentine also asked that a light in Dalton Park, opposite houses 222-223, which has not worked in four years, be repaired.

He was informed however is that the light will cost approximately €4000 to repair and there is no sufficient budget for the repair this year.

Council official Martin Murray said that there was cabling and ducting required and a new LED product, not just a single light.

“In light of the minimal budget we have, €4,000 is significant portion of that budget where we can actually replace 10 lights for the price of this one.”

Killucan parking

Cllr John Shaw asked that disabled markings be put in place at parking space across from Killucan Post Office, but was told that the road is particularly narrow at the at that point and the location would not be suitable for a disabled parking space.

“There is a spot beside the pharmacy, it’s a little bit up north of the post office, so could that be considered as a disabled parking space?” asked Cllr Shaw, only to be told that particular spot was a setdown space.
