Weir's Pharmacy – celebrating 60 years in business

Weir’s Pharmacy was founded by the late Joe and Kate Weir. Joe was a well known figure in business and community life. The business is now run by Joe’s eldest son Niall and his wife Anita.

Niall feels privileged to be a community pharmacist, and he and his professional and caring staff endeavour to help and advise all who call to the pharmacy.

“We have had a loyal customer base over the years and we are thankful to them for the support they have given us,” said Niall.

“We have a couple of customers that I meet regularly and who tell me that they have been coming in to us since we opened. While it is nice to hear this, you can’t take anything for granted and we are always trying to maintain the highest possible standards in customer care.

“As a pharmacist we meet many people from all walks of life and we see them when they are well and not so well, or when they have a family member who is ill. It is a rewarding profession, helping young and old through all the different phases of their lives.

“Of course, there is always time for a little chat and banter with the customers and you get to meet so many people from around the town and surrounding areas,” Niall said.

Although Weir’s Pharmacy has been in existence for 60 years, the history of the building stretches back almost 200 years. In 1822 the writer and scholar, William Carlson opened a school there and later the building and yard were used as a police barracks.

Joe Weir also had a great interest in photography, and he incorporated this passion into his business and opened a Camera Shop. It was through the Camera Shop that Niall met his wife.

Niall and Anita are both loud in their praise of their staff. “We have been so lucky over the years to have had so many marvellous people working for us”.

This is an exciting time for the Weir family, as not only are they celebrating the 60th birthday of their business, but they are also celebrating Multyfarnham GAA winning the county and Leinster championships.

It is more than 60 years since Multy last won the county championship. Joe Weir and his brothers, Leo Weir, Dr Kevin Weir who died recently, and Sean Weir of Weir’s Pub, were all involved with Multy GAA around that time.

This country pub has now evolved and incorporates a very popular and fine restaurant run by Niall’s brother Pat and his wife, Una.

Niall and family greatly appreciate and thank their customers for their support and loyalty over the decades.

Weir’s Pharmacy would very much like to thank the businesses that have wished them well in their 60th birthday celebrations and have supported them in this feature.
