Power fully restored to 3,000 customers in Delvin area following truck smash

Power has now been fully restored to some 3,000 customers in the Delvin area who were without electricity for a time last night, and for a number of hours today, when an articulated lorry allegedly collided with an ESB pole on Monday evening.

Gardaí and members of the ESB had to shut down Delvin Main Street shortly after 7.30pm on Monday evening when the incident occurred due to live power lines lying across the truck and onto the main street.

The power to the entire village was knocked out, as well as those living in nearby Bracklyn, Clonmellon and Athboy.

It's understood the Electricity Supply Board had to shut off supply from the local power station to make the area safe.

The pole and street light, which had been knocked clean from it's base, were made safe, with ESB crews working throughout the night until midday today to restore power to the remaining customers without power.

These included most of Delvin Main Street.

One member of the public said it was an inconvenience but they were happy nobody was hurt.

"Thankfully the truck driver and everyone who was passing by on the street were uninjured. The ESB were out working from around 5am this morning trying to restore power. Traffic is flowing freely through the village again."
