Don McLean

Artist whose music was played at Prince Harry's wedding to play Mullingar next week

The international artist Don McLean - who is playing a gig at The Mullingar Park Hotel next Tuesday night - is on a bit of a high these days.
That's because as more than a billion viewers around the world tuned in for the wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, it was confirmed by Major General Ben Bathurst that the Irish Guards played one of McLean’s most romantic songs, ‘And I Love You So’.
Don (whose grandfather and father, both also named Donald McLean, had roots in Scotland) said: "I am truly honoured that one of my favourite songs was chosen to be performed at such a very special occasion as the royal wedding I look forward to playing this track at my forthcoming gigs in Ireland."
Among those gigs is one on June 5 at Mullingar Park Hotel, when Don will perform with his full touring band.
Don McLean’s music goes down well everywhere, and following his shows in the UK, the Guardian reviewer wrote: "McLean’s Castles in the Air is lovely, and hearing him sing Vincent – his youthful eulogy to Van Gogh – is magical, a bucket-list moment. It turns into a sing-song marathon, and one chap is escorted away after simulating the act of prayer at the singer’s feet."
Entertainment Focus reported: "There is something haunting and magical to hear him play Crying, and for it to be so familiar, barely touched by the intervening decades. Don McLean is majestic, and he held the audience at the London Palladium in his thrall…it was an evening of rich entertainment. In truth, nothing could have prepared us for the near-religious experience the song (American Pie) induced in the audience, who were readily willing to submit to its intoxicating charms."
The Times reporter wrote: "A concert of well-worn rock ‘n’ roll and acoustic folk that placed the singer-songwriter somewhere between entertainer and poetic maverick. His masterpiece remains one of the great achievements of the singer-songwriter era… he played it, of course, and brilliantly. Finally, after the American Pie moment, came Vincent, as poignant as ever with its serene mood and words of acceptance. McLean’s concert was uplifting because it demonstrated a man doing whatever the hell he wanted after almost 50 years in the game."

Tickets for the Mullingar gig are available at the hotel and from ticketmaster.ie.
