Memorable Mullingar Shamrocks event as new GAA President attends

Saturday night was a special one in the history of Mullingar Shamrocks as members gathered in the Bloomfield House Hotel for the club’s Dinner Dance. The occasion was graced by the presence of the newly elected President of the GAA Jarlath Burns who delivered a superb address on the night.

Three sets of medals were presented with Will O’Callaghan of Newstalk’s Off the Ball and Midlands 103 fame a superb MC. The club is indebted to the work of the organising committee: Róisín Masterson, Rosemary Elliott Keating, Michelle Gavigan, Sharon Foy, Aileen Daly, Darina Maguire, Emer Buckley, Shandel Sheerin and Tom Hunt. All members were superb in their efforts, ensuring that the occasion was simply the best.

Westmeath GAA County Committee was represented by Frank Mescall, chairman.

GAA President makes impression

Newly elected GAA President Jarlath Burns made a major impression when he addressed the large gathering, on what was a great social occasion.

Speaking to the 200 guests, Mr Burns touched a wide range of issues and was fulsome in his praise for the Mullingar Shamrocks club in terms of their work on integration, noting how well placed they are in this regard. He went through the various dimensions of the club and he mentioned the legend that is Detty Cornally, club president.

Mr Burns referenced Kevin Lynch and Ray Smyth, two central players in the planned Mullingar Shamrocks development. He paid tribute to the club for being ambitious and forward-thinking and he emphasised the importance of the success of the minor footballers.

The president noted the importance of continuity for all GAA clubs. It’s the second year running that the club has had the GAA President in their midst: last year it was the turn of Larry McCarthy and he was well received. However, Mr Burns, who is just beginning his three-year term, is arguably a more impressive figure and he made a big impression on Saturday evening.

Indeed, it was significant that the new president rearranged his itinerary to be in attendance and he spoke of how it was his first Armagh game to miss in 20 years as he had to be in Mullingar for Saturday’s event. He also chaired his first Central Council meeting on Saturday morning.

The successful minor, U19 'B' and Division 6 teams were presented with their medals by the new GAA president on what was a proud evening for the progressive Mullingar club.
