Home insteadmaking friends with your computer

More and more seniors are discovering the benefits of staying connected through technology.

Older people are intrigued with internet technology and social networking tools such as Facebook and Twitter. However, some adults struggle with basic computer skills to support this technology.

New technology has not been designed to exclude older people. Home Instead Senior Care has found that in most cases older people simply fear the unknown. Learning new skills can be a daunting experience at any age but there is support available to help older people learn and experience the huge potential new technology has to offer.

Technology helps reduce senior depression and keeps families connected. Maintaining relationships with friends and family at a time in life when mobility becomes increasingly limited is challenging for older people. Internet access and use by seniors enables them to connect with sources of social support when face to face interaction becomes more difficult.

Technology is also a great way to keep the generations connected. If getting your family together is not feasible because perhaps you have health issues, your family live away from home or have other family commitments, why not learn to e-mail messages or use a service like Skype, Skype enables you to hear and see one another even from a distance, this way you can see you grandchildren who live in another country, ask a family member or friend to help you set it up.

If you need extra support, Home Instead Senior Care can assist seniors in their homes with non-medical tasks. Our Caregivers could help you or find someone to assist you with your computer as well as offering support with day to day activities such as meal preparation and light housekeeping.
