Whelehans pharmacy beauty man matters mens skincare

Most men stick to their old reliable soap and water as their “daily skin routine”. Men roll their eyes at the seemingly complicated and occult skin care rituals that women go through. However, there is method to our madness and men aren't just going about their skin care wrong, but are also doing damage to their skin. Skin care products are not all the same; different products are designed for different skin types eg.

If you have dry skin, using products intended for an oily skin will dry your skin out leaving you with flaky dry patches.

4 Skin Types in men

There are 4 main skin types each with very specific characteristics:

Normal: not particularly dry or oily, barely visible pores with a few blemishes and no major sensitivities.

Oily: enlarged pores and shiny almost greasy skin that is prone to blackheads, acne and cysts.

Dry: rough and dull complexion, often with red patches and blotches. Dry skin tends to be lacking in elasticity and more prone to fine lines and wrinkles.

Combination: a mixture of normal, dry and oily skin types. Usually skin would be normal or dry on the cheeks and oily on the forehead, nose and chin (your t-zone).

Perfect skin for men made easy

Using soap is bad for your skin. It is incredibly harsh, dries out your skin and the perfumes in most soaps can trigger allergic reactions. Instead, I recommend Thalgo's Cleansing Gel for men. It's made specifically for men's skin and removes dirt, free radicals and excess sebum without drying out your skin.

For shaving, try using an exfoliator like Thalgo's Deep Cleansing Scrub before using your shaving gel. Exfoliating your skin before shaving removes bacteria and ensures you are not shaving on dry skin leaving you with little nicks and irritating razor burn. After shaving, follow up with a cooling, hydrating aftershave balm.

This will moisturise your skin and eliminates irritation and cools down the skin. The last step in your new skin care routine is to moisturise. I recommend Thalgo's Regenerating Cream for men. This will replenish your skin’s natural moisture and as an added bonus, will help fight fine lines and wrinkles along with maintaining your skins elasticity. Learn more about the Thalgo range in Whelehans
