VISITING CLONMACNOISE

In the 6th century St Ciaran arrived to build a church on the banks of the mighty Shannon in the very centre of Ireland and Clonmacnoise was born in early Christian Ireland. It began as a modest settlement but over time the huts were replaced impressive stone buildings. It became a thriving centre for learning and creativity. So much so, it was there the high King of Ireland was buried in the year 915. Why not make it that bit more special and travel down by boat? Viking tours will take you there and back.

 

DRINKING A SUP OF WHISKEY AT KILBEGGAN DISTILLERY

Immerse yourself in over 250 years of Irish whiskey making at Kilbeggan Distillery and see the 19th century water wheel that’s still in use and the steam engine, which is still fired up on special occasions. You’ll enjoy a visit to the old warehouses and even get to meet the onsite distillers. But no trip to a distillery is complete without a wee drop. If you’re the designated driver don’t worry. You’ll get a taster size to enjoy the moment you get home.

Jump in the car to explore the surrounding villages and you’ll discover gastro delights in Glasson and wonderful nearby walking trails to work them off in the quiet country roads of Tubberclair. Soak up ancient history at the heart of Ireland in the quaint village of Mount Temple.

WALKING ALONG THE SHANNON BANKS NATURE TRAIL

This gorgeous 5km nature trail walk starts at the rear of Athlone Castle and takes you along the banks of the River Shannon and the old Athlone Canal.

There are four information boards along the trail detailing flora, fauna, wildlife and fish that are along the walk.
