Downs man carty captains mater dei to allireland title

The Downs clubman Cian Carty captained Dublin Mater Dei to All-Ireland honours at the weekend, as they picked up their first ever Corn Comhairle Ardoideachais title at the Sigerson Cup last weekend in Cork.

The third level institute, which lies in the shadow of Croke Park, claimed silverware, following a 4-21 to 1-5 win over Limerick CFE in the first final of the weekend, on Friday afternoon at The Farm.

Carty, along with Peter McKenna and Max Charles from junior club Ballycomoyle were the only Westmeathmen to pick up silverware over a weekend which saw DCU take the Sigerson Cup; Garda College claim Trench Cup honours, and UU Magee from Derry take Corn na Mac Leinn silverware.

“We were delighted to be there representing our college and our clubs as well,” Carty said.

“We had big wins in the quarter and semi-finals and we were confident of victory, but we were surprised by the winning margin.”

Goals were key to this win, with Mater Dei leading by 3-8 to 1-3 at half-time, with their goals coming from Davy Carroll, Ronan Mulligan and Ciaran McMahon.
Max Charles contributed a point in the final, with Peter McKenna also featuring.

The win was made all the more special as it was an inaugural triumph for one of the smallest colleges on the island with just 379 students.

Elsewhere, John Heslin was on the UCD team that lost Friday’s Sigerson Cup semi-final to DCU, while Tyrrellspass clubman Aaron O’Brien was on the IT Carlow squad who lost to UCC.

St Loman’s clubman Shane Dempsey was on the St Pat’s side that lost the Trench Cup final to Garda College, with Rosemount’s Dylan Hassett on the WIT panel that lost the semi-final to the eventual winners. Moate’s Gareth Murray was on the RCSI squad who lost the Corn na Mac Leinn decider.
