Flanagan signs for Sarries

Mullingar RFC alumnus Mark Flanagan has signed a two year contract with Champions Cup finalists Saracens.

Lock Flanagan earned his move to Saracens, who are the reigning English Premiership champions, on the back of a string of impressive performances with English Championship side Bedford Blues this season. The former underage international has appeared 18 times for the Blues since making the move across the English Channel from French side Mont-de-Mason last summer.

Flanagan began his professional career with Leinster, making his debut in 2010.

He moved to France in 2013 in the search for more game time. The decision to leave his home province proved to be a wise one as he enjoyed a highly productive two years in the second tier of the French league.

According to Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall, Flanagan has been on the Premiership leaders’ radar for a while.

“We have been watching Mark for some time and he has proved himself one of the most impressive lock forwards in the Championship. We’re delighted he’s chosen to advance his career at Saracens.”

Speaking after the move was announced, Flanagan, who has represented Ireland at U18, U19 and U20 levels, expressed his delight at moving to a club of Saracens’ stature.

“Joining Saracens is a fantastic opportunity for me. Sarries have a proven track record of developing players and I can’t wait to get started next season.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time at Bedford Blues and I’m grateful for the support they have shown me but I’m really looking forward to joining such a fantastic club.”
