Killucan school launches Green School travel theme

The students and staff at Columba College, Killucan - particularly the school"s Green Schools Committee - have been very busy of late, having launched the school"s fifth theme in the National Green Schools Programme. The chosen theme is travel.Attending the recent launch were guests Mieke Scholte, Regional Director of the Travel Theme, Garda Thomas Blake, Mullingar, and Anthony Coyne of Kinnegad Cycles.Speaking to those in attendance, Columba College students Roisín Shanley, Sean Keane, Andrew Nolan and Agatha Etcheri spoke of the need to re-think attitudes to travel, encouraging people to strive to walk, cycle, car pool or use public transport to travel to school.Teacher Siobhán Casey and her music group composed and sang appropriate songs for the occasion, and refreshments were enjoyed by all those in attendance.The Green Schools Committee at Columba College have drawn up their action plan, and have already started their 'Park and Stride' programme for students on buses. Students are also encouraged to walk or cycle to school.Community Gardaí, Neil Donnelly and Thomas Blake have visited the school on a number of occasions, offering guidance and advice to students about road safety.
