Examiner journalist wins 'Best News Story' at Local Ireland Media Awards
Westmeath Examiner journalist Eilís Ryan scooped the award for best news story at the Local Ireland Media awards last week for her harrowing report, Toni’s legacy: mother fights for reforms.
The article Eilís earned the prestigious award for followed the devastating story of Tracey Monaghan, and her struggle for garda reforms after her daughter had tragically taken her own life.
It highlighted the shortcomings faced by the family in their interaction with An Garda Síochana in terms of guidance, assistance and even, at times, sympathy between Toni Marie’s passing and the inquest.
Eilís said: “I want to thank the Local Ireland Awards and applaud all the nominees in the category for the important work they have done and continue to do.
"I am honoured to receive the recognition of this award, and I hope this recognition will further spread the importance of this story for more people to see, far and wide.”
It is the third award the Westmeath Examiner journalist has won for her writing.
