The group visit Mullaghmeen several times a year to enjoy the ever-changing life of the forest. At this time of the year human intervention is more evident with the tracks of machinery running between the trees as Coillte continues to manage the production of timber from the forest, but very soon, as the days grow longer, the forest itself will begin again its yearly cycle of growth and decay. On this year"s mild and dry St. Stephen"s Day, a large group of the Ramblers was led by Oliver Usher on a walk through the forest which moved from trail to trail through some of the less-frequented areas and took in several tough climbs on the way.The route included the highest point in County Westmeath which has been cleared of trees in the last couple of years so that all-round view is possible. The neighbouring Hill of Maol, the Hills of Loughcrew and Lough Sheelin are just some of the places to be seen while walkers catch their breath after the steep climb to the summit. Oliver Usher was, as always, a great source of information on the history and geology of the area throughout the walk.Another group of Ramblers followed one of several colour-coded routes which have been clearly marked by Coillte in their continuing development of the leisure potential of the forest. Coillte"s work is clearly being recognised now as was demonstrated by the large number of walkers other than the Ramblers who visited Mullaghmeen on St. Stephen"s Day.The Ramblers next outing will be to Abbeyshrule for a loop walk on Sunday January 4th. The group will leave Boherquill at 1-30p.m. In the meantime all the Ramblers, their families and friends are wished a Happy and Healthy New Year!Sports ComplexTo book any of the facilities in Streete Parish Park Sports Complex please phone Jimmy Brady 087 9287129.
