The group visited the tiny 6th century church dedicated to St. Tysilio on Church Island. The two magnificent bridges which link Anglesey to the mainland can be seen from the island; the Menai Suspension Bridge which was built by Thomas Telford and opened in 1826, and George Stephenson"s Britannia Bridge, completed in 1850. As they walked along the Belgian Promenade beneath the suspension bridge the Ramblers could appreciate the great achievement of its construction. In warm sunny weather on Saturday the Ramblers travelled to Snowdonia National Park for a walk starting at Rhyd Ddu station on the narrow-gauge Welsh Highland Railway which runs from Caernarvon to Porthmadog. Throughout the day the party enjoyed the magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The journey back to Menai Bridge took in the village of Beddgelert with its picturesque stone houses set beside the river.Sunday morning promised weather even better than on Saturday as the Ramblers set out to follow the Snowdon Ranger trail from Llwyn Onn over another col and down to the town of LLanberris. Once again the warm dry weather was perfect for walking and the Ramblers were treated to stunning views of the mountains as well as Llyn Cwllan and Llyn Padarn, the lakes at the start and the end of the day"s walk. The Snowdon Mountain Railway could also be seen as the group neared Llanberris. The return journey to Menai Bridge passed through more quaint hamlets with their small stone houses and churches before a short stop for refreshments at the re-developed Victoria Dock in Caernarvon. The Anglesey Arms was the venue for dinner on Sunday night during which Liz Gaccon was presented with a framed photograph as a memento of her trip to Strangford with the Ramblers earlier in the year. The Ramblers must first thank Liz Gaccon for the effort she put into organizing the weekend as well as actually leading the walk in what was without doubt one of the best ever away trips for the Ramblers. Many thanks to Olive McCormack who worked so hard on organising the trip; and to Brian Nerney as always for planning and leadership. Sincere thanks to Paddy O"Brien of Rover Coaches in Mullingar who not only provided the coach, but who also drove - no mean feat on the narrow Welsh roads! Thanks also to our music makers Janet, Liz and Sally for the great entertainment they provided over the weekend. On Sunday, April 26th, the Ramblers travelled to Dublin for a walk led by Oliver Usher which included a range of contrasting experiences.Paddy Croghan will lead a walk in Doorey near Ballymahon, on Sunday, May 3rd.
