Kinnegad library plans to be revisited in 2010

Plans for a library in Kinnegad will be revisited by Westmeath County Council next year, although funding for such a project will require a sanction by central government, members of the Committee were told.Cllr. Mick Dollard (Labour) said that owing to a population explosion in Kinnegad in recent years, Westmeath County Council should revisit its plans to provide a library service for the town.Officials said that the provision of library services in Kinnegad will be reviewed in the context of the formulation of a new Library Service Development Plan for the county in 2010, noting that the current development plan is in its final year.'The provision of a new library will require Department sanction and resources to be made available, such as funding for a new library premises, fit out, stock and sanction for staffing, within the lifetime of a new development plan for the Library Services,' the Council"s reply read.Chimney 'problems' at Bun DaireCllr. Pat McLoughlin (Fine Gael) has asked Westmeath County Council to identify if there might be a chimney design fault in the houses at Kinnegad"s new Bun Daire estate.Speaking at the Council"s Mullingar Area Committee meeting, Cllr. McLoughlin said that residents have concerns regarding the entry of smoke back into the rooms from open fire grates.Council officials said that the architect who designed the housing scheme for the Council is currently examining the chimney design.Although satisfied with the reply, Cllr. McLoughlin said that it was a disappointment that this minor hitch had affected an otherwise excellent development.'The Council should act quickly to rectify this before selling off all the houses,' he said. 'The houses are only six months old, but already many of the residents are getting a heavy smell of smoke.'Tophouse Golf SocietyThe Kinnegad-based Tophouse Golf Society"s next outig will take place on Saturday, May 23 at Rathcore Golf Club outside Enfield. The outing is kindly sponsored by Padraig Byrne (Bruce Betting).Drugs Awareness SeminarRathwire Hall will be the venue for a seminar on Drugs Awareness, organised by An Garda Siochána and parents in the Killucan-Rathwire area on Thursday next, May 21.Members of An Garda Siochána will speak to parents and to young people from the area, and while the aim of the seminar is to educate, it is hoped that in the long term, a drugs programme could be established in Killucan.Parents, along with the various stakeholders in the country, have come together over recent months to discuss various problems in the Killucan area, such as drug use, anti-social behaviour, underage drinking and teenagers" access to fake ID cards.The parents hope to formulate an effective campaign to ensure that Killucan and Rathwire continues to be a safe place for children to live, learn and play.Thursday night"s seminar kicks off at 8pm, and all are welcome to attend.
