Sister to tell Mullingar Masses of Haiti work
A nun who has been working in disaster-struck Haiti is to give a first-hand account to people in Mullingar this September of how bad things have been there, and will describe what the Irish charity Trócaire has been doing to help the Haitian people.Sr. Mary Hardiman, currently home from Haiti, met with Bishop Smith this week, and has agreed to speak at Masses in the Cathedral on September 5, outlining the nature of her work in Haiti, and the use of funds from Trócaire's appeal across Ireland, which raised a total of €4,681,168 across Ireland, of which €305,000 came from the Meath diocese. Thanks to the generosity of those who responded to the Trócaire appeal, shelter is being provided to 900,000 people; life-giving healthcare is being provided to a million; food to 1.5m, and assistance towards to rebuilding of schools and hospitals is being given, as well as trauma counselling and education for affected children.Trocaire is now planning a major five-year rebuilding and reconstruction programme.
