Gaffney's syndicate win €33,715

Update, 3.35pm Monday 13 May

Midlands couple keep numbers for just one more draw and win €500,000

A midlands couple got the week off to the perfect start today by picking up a cheque for half a million euro, though they almost didn’t make it as the excited husband explains:

“We’ve been playing the same numbers for a bit now and hadn’t had much luck. I was going to change them. I’m glad I stuck with them for one more draw. Thanks to those numbers, I’m half way to being a millionaire.”

The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, won the top prize in the EuroMillions Plus draw on May 3. They played via the National Lottery’s online service, Play Online. “It’s so handy,” said the winners. “Just log on and away you go.”

The good news is still sinking in and the happy couple have decided to take some time out before making any big decisions on how to spend they’re windfall. “It’s a great win and it’ll give our family security for the future. We never dreamed it’d happen to us but it just goes to show you never know what’s around the corner.”

Gaffney’s Syndicate, a group of 16 friends, neighbours, and couples from Delvin who meet in Carmel Gaffney’s pub, matched five numbers in the EuroMillions draw on Tuesday April 23, and won €33,715.

The lucky group have been playing EuroMillions and Lotto together for five years, and they celebrated their win in Carmel Gaffney’s at the weekend.

Nine members of the syndicate received their big cheque from National Lottery field sales representative Gerry McCormack at Michael Leonard’s shop in Delvin, where they bought their lucky ticket.
