The organisers of last Saturday’s clean-up day in Mullingar, the local Tidy Towns Committee, were more than happy with the manner in which the public responded.

There was a general clean-up in the centre of the town where litter and weeds were the main target while others travelled to the approach roads to clean signage, some of which was in a poor state.

As it transpired, a number of estates in the town had, with the advent of some milder weather, arranged to kick start their own localised clean-ups and that limited numbers somewhat but the overall response was encouraging.

“We were very happy, it was a great turnout,” Tidy Town Committee spokesperson, Marguerite Buckley told the Westmeath Examiner on Sunday.
“We specially want to thank the many people, who are not involved with the work of the Tidy Towns Committee but who gave their time on Saturday.”

Marguerite also extended thanks to Canore Hygiene and Buckley’s SuperValu, who generously supplied products used in the clean-up effort.

She said Mullingar’s entry into the national Tidy Towns competition will be filed on Wednesday of this week and further clean-ups will be announced in the coming weeks.
