Family fun in Fore with the Soap Box Derby and more

Where in Westmeath will you find a go-kart race for grown-ups, a treasure hunt for children and a multi-coloured ball race to rival a Sony advertisement? You will find them all in Fore on July 7, as part of an incredible Ballycomoyle GFC-organised fun day with something for all the family.

The first Soap Box derby will be run in heats and nearly 30 competitors have already declared.

The treasure hunt is in the grounds of Fore Abbey, where children will follow clues, solve puzzles and outrun giant rolling balls of stone. Okay, maybe the rolling stone won’t be there but who knows what treasure remains hidden away among that ancient stone.

The day’s events also include a barbecue, live music and artisan food stalls.
Something for children to work on now is an art competition. Ballycomoyle have invited children to paint a picture of a soap box go-kart or one of Fore’s incredible wonders like the Abbey and bring it along on the day.

“What we want to do is have a great day out for the whole family. The people making the soapboxes have been working on them for a couple of weeks and they are taking the whole engineering process quite seriously,” said Sean Daly, Ballycomoyle GFC chairman.

“On the day, these carts are going to look incredible racing through Fore. The treasure hunt will be super fun for younger children and the ball race will be a bit of craic too.

“Anyone who has ever been out to one of our community events will know, it is always a place of great hospitality, great food and great craic.”
