A night at the mausoleum

Unlock the secrets of the past with heritage guide Bartle D’Arcy on Culture Night with a free guided tour of the interior of the Nugent Mausoleum in Fore.

The relatively modern iconic building perched below the Rock of Fore dates from the early 19th century but encompasses the Nugent Family Crypt first used in 1680 and was created around a much older structure, The Anchorites Cell.

On Culture Night take the opportunity to go into one of the Wonders of Fore with the Anchorites Cell, largely untouched for 500 years, situated above the altar in the mausoleum building. See the Latin inscribed plaque to the last hermit Patrick Beglan, who died in 1616 and learn about the tradition of the White Martyrs that inspired such devotion.

It is the resting place for the powerful Nugent family since 1680, and you will hear the history of this family who accompanied William the Conqueror to England from their home in Normandy and then of Gilbert de Nogent, who came to Ireland with Hugh de Lacy, later becoming his brother-in-law and Baron of Delvin.

Meet at 7.45pm at Fore Abbey car park; bring a torch and suitable footwear for a steep hillside walk.

The evening is only suitable for children over 12 years accompanied by an adult. Places limited– book on info@directingtourism.ie.
