Surplus motorway land returned to owners

Nine parcels of surplus land along the M6 Kilbeggan to Athlone motorway, totalling just over 18 acres, are to be given back to their original owners.

The disposal of the surplus lands was approved by Westmeath councillors in accordance with terms in the Local Government Act 2001 at the council’s monthly meeting in Mullingar on Monday September 23.

Speaking to councillors at the meeting, acting county manager Barry Kehoe explained the lands in question are to be transferred as agreed with landowners now that work is complete and the land is no longer needed.

At the meeting councillors approved the disposal of lands at Correagh, Boyannagh, Glen, Killogeenaghan, Williamstown, Seeoge, Kilbeg and Ballinderry Big to landowners including Coillte, Liam Butler, Aidan Farrell, John Kelly, Michael Scott, Patrick Rowan, Francis Derwin, Mary Holloway and James McDonnell.

Mr Kehoe said further surplus lands for disposal are expected to come before councillors at the October meeting.
