Belvedere too costly, says councillor

The cost of entrance to Belvedere House and Gardens is too high for those living in the locality, Cllr Ruth Illingworth told the last meeting of Mullingar Town Council.

She asked if Westmeath County Council would consider reducing the entrance charge with the aim of attracting more people who actually live locally.

“It’s obvious the place takes a lot to maintain but a lot of people feel the entrance charge is too high for people actually living in the locality,” she said.

“A small reduction in the fee might actually bring in more visitors.”

In a written reply from the council, however, Cllr Illingworth was told that all matters, including membership, admission rates, special events and activities, are reviewed on an ongoing basis to ensure best value can continue to be afforded to all visitors.

“The objective is to maximise the income steam required to run Belvedere House, Gardens and Park to a high standard in the context of its status as a major tourist attraction in the region, while maintaining the operations within the approved subvention,” the council statement said.
