Address of Recognition for Emmet Cahill

Mullingar Town Council acknowledged the contribution Emmet Cahill has made to the world of music with an Address of Recognition on Monday of last week (April 28).

Emmet (23) is the second child in a family of three. Emmet’s father Martin is originally from Mountnugent, County Cavan and it is there that Emmet was born and where he lived until he was 11. At that stage, the family moved to Mullingar, which is his mother Carmel’s home place.

Emmet’s early education was at Scoil Bhride, Mountnugent and at Taghmon NS. He began voice coaching at seven years of age under tutor Dearbhla Conlon-Maloney; but his music education had begun at home with his father, a music teacher.

Emmet’s second level education was at St Finian’s College, where he was a student of the Schola Cantorum Music Scholarship Programme; he also played church organ and violin. His first time to perform on stage was in a 2004 Student Players production of Les Miserables at Mullingar Arts Centre.

For the last six years, Emmet has been a student of vocal coach Mary Brennan. In 2009, he commenced a BA Performance Degree at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and in 2010 he was awarded the accolade of ‘Most Promising Young Singer’ at the Royal Irish Academy, as well as ‘The Most Promising Young Tenor Award’ by the John McCormack Society, Dublin.

Over the last three years, Emmet has been as a lead singer with the popular music group, Celtic Thunder. The group has sold more than one million albums, and their most recent (Mythology) went to number one on both the World Music Billboard charts and the Australian Music DVD charts.

Closer to home, Emmet has also performed the National Anthem at Croke Park on three occasions and he is especially proud of performing in January 2009 for the 125th anniversary of the GAA.

Aside from music, Emmet is a keen sports fan and has played with St Loman’s GAA Club.

He says he holds his achievements on the playing field on the same level as his musical achievements thus far!

He has won championship medals playing at U14, U16 and U21 levels.
