Gardaí escape injury as patrol car is rammed

Two Mullingar gardaí escaped injury when their patrol car was rammed in the town in the early hours of this (Tuesday) morning.

The officers had been pursuing a vehicle which was stolen from a house in Burnell Drive shortly after 3.30am.

In what is believed to be the latest in a series of burglaries in the greater Mullingar area, two masked men, said to be in their 20s and described as being of athletic build, seized the vehicle but they were intercepted by gardaí.

The pursuit continued through the town before the vehicle was abandoned close to the Mullingar Shamrocks grounds in Springfield. The culprits made off on foot and despite an intensive garda search, they were not located.

Then, at about 5.15am, a second car, a 06 D registered red Mazda was stolen from the Ashfield area after another house had been burgled. Again two men were involved in the theft and investigating officers believe they were the pair  who were involved in the earlier incident.
