Motorists drive on lough owel during the big freeze of 1963

While meteorologists are predicting a harsh winter, hopefully it won't come close to the 'Big Freeze' of 1963.

That winter was the coldest of the twentieth century with lakes all over the country freezing over and although more snow fell in 1947, the average temperatures were not as low. In 1963, the bitterly cold weather arrived around Christmas and continued until March.

Footage filmed by well known local photographer Sean Magee (see below) shows the impact that the sub zero temperatures had on the people of Mullingar and their recreational habits.

From those hardy souls that drove across Lough Owel to the youngsters sleding down hills, some people at least seemed to make the most of the weather.
