Mullingar woman pays tribute to mothers of syria ahead of mothers day

A Mullingar woman working for Trócaire has paid tribute to the mothers of Syria this Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day (Sunday March 15) marks the fourth anniversary of the Syrian conflict.

Hannah Evans, who comes from Mullingar, said that it is an important day to remember the millions of innocent Syrian people caught up in the conflict.

She also thanked people from Westmeath for their continued support as Trócaire responds to the crisis in Syria by providing assistance to people affected. Trócaire has supported 93,000 Syrians with humanitarian assistance to date.

She said: “The war in Syria has left over twice the population of Ireland in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. Five million children have had to flee their homes.

“Mothers in Syria are raising their children in almost impossible circumstances, many of them living in tents and other temporary accommodation with no access to basic infrastructure.

“The war is now entering its fifth year. Schools across much of Syria have been closed for the duration of the war, meaning that many children have never seen inside a classroom.

“I would like to thank people for their ongoing support for Trócaire’s work, not only in Syria but around the world. Last year Trócaire’s projects reached 3.4 million people in the developing world and that is possibly only due to the generosity of the public.

“We are currently asking people to support our Lenten campaign. Donations made to Trócaire during Lent sustain our projects throughout the year.”

Trócaire’s Lenten boxes have been distributed across the country. To order a Lenten box or to donate to Trócaire’s Lenten appeal, please visit trocaire.org.
