Smoking hot 80s westmeath hurler on second captains live

When Declan Gillen had a sneaky fag while on the bench for Westmeath hurlers during their 1989 Leinster senior hurling championship clash against Kilkenny, little did he think that it would come back to haunt him over a quarter of century later.

Last night, the Cullion stalwart became the second inductee into the Second Captains Live 'Irish Sports Smoking Hall of Shame'.

Gillen, who was only sporting one boot, and two of his fellow subs were sitting on top of the dugout at O'Connor Park in Tullamore when the TV camera caught him smoking.

According to Second Captain's Live presenter Ken Earley, Gillen told a researcher that he wasn't the only sub that day to light up but that "he was a cute farmer and he was smoking it in his fist".

The game itself was a one sided affair with running out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 4-29 to 3-5.
