Happy birthday derek

The Westmeath Examiner helped road racer Derek McGee celebrate his 29th birthday this afternoon by presenting him with the sponsorship of his entry to the Race of the South at Walderstown this weekend.

“Thanks to the Examiner for the sponsorship,” said Derek.

“I’m looking forward to the weekend. I love the local race and there’s always a lot of support and I always want to do well there.”

Derek has a good record at the Athlone track. He took his debut national wins there on his first visit, in 2011, and has competed there each year since.

He is competing in the super-twin class (650cc); the Supersport (600) and in two superbike (1,000) races.

Asked if his form was good following his success at the Isle of Man TT, Derek said: “The TT was brilliant. I’m definitely going back next year.

“There’s so much time on the bike, there’s so much mileage, it leaves you sharp on bike, so hopefully we will be on for a few podiums at Walderstown.

“I’m looking for a good steady weekend.”
