Mullingar Show - 180 years of tradition continues

For 180 years the Mullingar Agricultural Show has supported agriculture and industry in Westmeath and the midlands, and this year that long tradition continues on Sunday, July 9.

This year, reinforcing the importance of Westmeath talent in every field of endeavour, including entertainment, Foster and Allen will do the official opening of the show at 2pm.

Mullingar Show attracts entries from across Ireland to the showgrounds at Culleen, and the classes reflect the traditional agricultural strengths of Westmeath in pedigree and commercial cattle and sheep showing.

Horse and pony showing are strong at Mullingar Show, and the large entry in showjumping continues a tradition of excellence. There are classes for poultry and a dog show too, and horticulture and cookery are well represented in the indoor section, along with arts, crafts and photography.

Mullingar Show also has a large trade stand area, indoor and outdoor, with stands reflecting all aspects of country and town life – from jodhpurs to jewellery, wellies to wine, food to fire extinguishers. This year, Agri Aware will be at the show with the mobile farm – always a big hit with the family, and the Dog Show is at 2pm (all entries taken on the field; plaques sponsored by Mullingar Pet Hospital).

There is Odlums All Ireland Home Cooking Championship Qualifier ahead of the final at Tullamore Show on Sunday August 13, and there are qualifiers for the All Ireland Baking Championship and the Easterlicious Cook Of the Year.

Demonstrating that Mullingar Show keeps up with the times, there is a new category in the photography section this year, for best selfie.

Among the big categories are the Beef To The Heel Mullingar Heifer and Bullock All Ireland Championships – and, as always, at Mullingar, there is something for all the family.
