Levels on Lough Owel, which supplies water to Mullingar and surrounding areas, are low this autumn and Irish Water are still asking customers to ‘conserve water usage'.

Recent rain has ‘helped stabilise water levels on Lough Owel – Irish Water

Irish Water are continuing to monitor water levels in Lough Owel, and though the recent wet weather has helped stabilise levels in the lake, they are still asking customers to conserve water.

In a statement Irish Water said: “The low rainfall since last October has resulted in the water level of Lough Owel being much lower than normal for this time of year.

“This situation is likely to continue into the autumn and we will need to assess the level of rainfall the autumn brings and the impact this will have on the recovery of the water levels in Lough Owel.

“We are continuing to ask customers to conserve their water usage for the foreseeable future. To help mitigate the lack of rainfall and to conserve water, we have intensified our water conservation activities by finding and fixing leaks in the Mullingar Regional Water Supply Scheme.

“To date we have repaired 334 leaks this year on the public water main network across County Westmeath, and 177 of those were in the Mullingar area. If customers are aware of any leaks on the public water main network we would ask them to contact our call centre at 1850 278278 or by filling in the form on our website water.ie.”
