Mullingar couple win €23k on Winning Streak

Mullingar man Denis Burke and his wife Sylvia were celebrating on Saturday evening after they won €23,000 on Winning Streak.

Denis (71) was playing on behalf of his wife of 47 years, who watched from the audience. Next year the couple will be celebrating the 50th anniversary since they first met. Denis is Mullingar born and bred but spent seven years out of the country in the 70’s – leaving Ireland for Australia in 1970. Both Denis and Sylvia’s boys, Matthew and Philip, were born in Australia and the family returned to Mullingar in 1977.

Denis is now retired having had a stint owning his own business in the 1980s and then spent a number of years, until retirement, as a sales rep covering every road in Ireland! Denis claims that he had a funny feeling all week about his three stars but was still shocked when a relative said that his wife’s name had been pulled out on Winning Streak. A careful type, Denis doesn’t want to speculate what to do with their winnings but insists the family “won’t go mad”.

Denis was among the five lucky players from Westmeath, Dublin (2) and Cork who won prizes totalling €191,000 on the second show of the new season of Winning Streak which was presented by Marty Whelan and Sinead Kennedy, and recorded in RTÉ Studios. The biggest winner on the night was Madeline Carthy from Strokestown, Co. Roscommon who won €93,000 plus a holiday to Venice worth €3,000.
