Westmeath County Council severe weather update, February 28

Statment from the council

County Westmeath experienced significant snow showers overnight, particularly over the eastern half of the county.

According to Met Éireann, further scattered heavy snow showers will continue today, tonight and tomorrow with further accumulations and the county is under a Status Orange Weather Warning up to noon tomorrow, Thursday.

Further warnings may issue for later Thursday and Friday.

Council crews have been out treating roads since yesterday evening and a further treatment was applied from 5am this morning.

Snow ploughs are in use on the priority routes, being the National Primary and Secondary roads and the TII Motorway Maintenance Contractor is working to keep the motorways and dual carriageways in operation.

The council wishes to thank those business and property owners who have cleared snow from the footpaths in front of their premises and appeals to others to do likewise.

People are also reminded to be aware of their more vulnerable neighbours and to ensure that they have an adequate supply of fuel, food and medical supplies.

See www.winterready.ie for further advice, and keep up to date with national and local advice through the relevant media channels.
