Road clearing in Mullingar at the weekend.

Statement from Westmeath County Council on the weather

Monday 5 March 2018, 2.30pm

Conditions in County Westmeath continue to improve and while all National Primary, National Secondary, Regional Roads and many local roads are now passable we would urge all motorists to take great care.

While all main roads in and around Mullingar, Athlone and the other towns and villages in the county are passable, Council crews, assisted by contractors are continuing to clear remaining local roads.

Given the scale of the challenge the assistance of the public in terms of clearing roads in their local areas would be extremely helpful.

This could include the use of appropriate equipment such as tractors with loaders, and people who assist are requested to clear snow safely and to avoid creating any additional hazards.

The public are also requested to conserve water, as these conditions place additional demands on the water services infrastructure.

Westmeath County Council resumed normal business this morning, Monday, 5th March 2018 and all public facilities are operating.

The Council is grateful to our staff, volunteers, local contractors and public bodies who assisted in many ways in preparing for and responding to the extreme weather situation and its aftermath over the past week.

If you require assistance from Westmeath County Council please call the Council’s main telephone number: 044 9332000.
