Weather update: Rain set to continue

It looks like the rain is here to stay for the weekend with some breaks on Sunday.

The weather forecast for today is for a cloudy and breezy day with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Low cloud will make it misty over the hills and in coastal areas and the rain will be heavy at times. Highest temperatures of 15 or 16 degrees in fresh and gusty southwest winds, easing a little later in the day.

Met Éireann is giving for further patchy rain overnight. Lowest temperatures 9 or 10 degrees, winds will become light variable in the north.

Tomorrow (Saturday) is set to be another cloudy day overall with further outbreaks of rain. Highest temperatures of 16 or 17 degrees in a moderate to fresh southwest or west wind, cooler at the coast.

The national weather forecaster says tomorrow night (Saturday) will see light southerly winds will veer westerly and freshen. There'll be more rain, heavy at times. Temperatures will fall to between 11 degrees in the north and 14 degrees in the south.

The outlook for Sunday is further outbreaks of rain in the west and northwest, with the south and southeast faring better with perhaps some sunny spells developing. Temperatures on the low side in the west and northwest at around 13 degrees and up to 17 degrees in the southeast. Strong westerly winds will steadily ease through the day.

Looking ahead to Monday, there'll be showers in the northwest but elsewhere will become drier with some sunshine breaking through later. Temperatures will recover to near normal for the time of year with light to moderate west to northwest winds.

Tuesday currently looks dry and sunny with light westerly winds and temperatures around normal for the time of year.

Current indications suggest a slight improvement for the midweek weather with a small rise in temperatures as winds become southerly in direction.
