Gaybrook fights back against scourge of litter

The bog road, as the locals of Gaybrook call it, is a beautiful place to walk and with the lockdown it is great amenity, but shamefully, it is littered with waste, anything from plastic bottles and beer bottles, to cans of all descriptions, and even lately cardboard neatly wrapped up and a dead sheep.

This information comes from a number of people in the parish who put in a huge effort to clean up the area.

They reported that the dead sheep found recently, is the second that has been drumped in the area.

On Saturday, with the help of Westmeath County Council, who supplied the bins bags and equipment for picking up waste, local families, the Corroons, Floods and Flanagans – and mostly teenagers with their parents – cleaned up the area.

It is now in very good condition and hopefully that will be the end of the littering there.

The message from those families is: "Would the people who drop litter, please think!.

The community there are hoping there will be no more dead sheep, and they are investigating the installation of CCTV surveillance in the area.
