Supporters of Milltown GAA club have been out in force this month for the club's Marathon 4 Milltown fundraiser.

The club had asked supporters to run, jog, walk, swim or cycle a marathon throughout April to raise funds for the development of its grounds and facilities. To date supporters have donated almost €8,000.

Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner, club official Paul Heduan said that there has been a great response from the community to the initiative, with Milltown Gaels taking part in such far flung locations as Australia, Canada and the United States.

Paul, a seasoned open water swimmer, and his clubmates Alan Geraghty, Conor Dillon and Joe Halligan recently took to the icy waters of Lough Owel to gain a bit of publicity for Marathon 4 Milltown as it enters the final week.

Praising the local community for its support, he says that hopes are high that the club will reach its target of €10,000 and perhaps even surpass it.

“It's been great. We are delighted. It has really taken off. There will be a grand finale on May 1 when we will be holding a Dawn To Dusk Relay Challenge. All of the players are asked to put in as many kilometres as the can over the day. It is also a challenge between the men's and ladies' parts of the club to see which will put in the most kilometres over the day.”
