Mullingar Tidy Towns confirms details of Brosna Trail

Mullingar Tidy Towns, as part of National Heritage Week and Water Heritage Day 2021 (August 14-22), confirmed details of its latest initiative for the town – the River Brosna Heritage Trail.

In early 2021, Mullingar Tidy Towns made a successful application for funding for the project through Local Authority Water Programme.

The plan would take into consideration a number of areas:

1. Mapping the River Brosna, from where it enters Mullingar, through the town and where it leaves the built-up area.

2. Finding the right location for easy-access viewing points for the public to enjoy.

3. Having the viewing boards designed by local signs manufacturer Sean Doran.

4. Collecting the information for the boards. Historical information was provided by historians Ruth Illingworth and member of Mullingar Tidy Towns Jason McKevitt.

5. Seeking permission form Westmeath County Council and Mullingar Shamrocks, who were only delighted to help with this project.

Mullingar Tidy Towns chairperson Bill Collentine thanked everyone involved in putting the River Brosna trail together.

A video of the trail will be available in the coming weeks on the Mullingar Tidy Towns online platforms.

The trail

1. Springfield sports ground, home to Mullingar Shamrocks, at the rear of the biodiversity walkway adjacent to the River Brosna.

2. Public car park adjacent to Buckley’s SuperValu and alongside Shaw’s Department Store.

3. Mullingar Town Park near the Annebrook House Hotel.

4. At the foot of Gaol Hill car park near the Tranquillity Park and Westmeath County buildings.

5. On the Lynn Road in front of the new Gaelscoil An Choillín.

6. Where the Brosna leaves the town, under the Joe Dolan Bridge – the sign is at the foot of the bridge on the Lynn Road side.
