MEP Markey encourages young people to avail of free inter-rail passes

Applications now open for those aged between 18 and 20

Fine Gael MEP Colm Markey has encouraged young people aged between 18 and 20 to apply for free rail passes to mark 2022 European Year of Youth.

The DiscoverEU programme has been on hold since 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic but will return next year, and 60,000 passes are available; applications are open until October 26.

Participants from Ireland may also have the cost of a plane or ferry ticket covered in order to reach mainland Europe.

The Midlands-North-West MEP said he is thrilled to see the scheme return, after a difficult 18 months for young people.

“Young people have made huge sacrifices over the last 18 months to protect public health and have missed out on so much. I am delighted these passes will be available, as this is a fantastic opportunity to take advantage of the freedom of movement throughout the EU, explore new cultures, develop life skills and connect with people all over the continent,” he said.

Successful applicants may travel for a minimum of one day up to 30 days and will have to take their trips between March 1, 2022 and February 28, 2023.

All travellers will be offered flexible bookings through a new mobile travel pass and the departure date can be changed at any moment before they leave.

Mr Markey said anyone thinking of applying should do so without delay. “60,000 passes are available but are likely to be snapped up quickly, so I would encourage young people in Ireland to sign up as soon as possible either as an individual or group of up to five people on the DiscoverEU website.

“It’s also important to point out that young people with special needs will also be entitled to receive additional support”, he concluded.
