County councillor resigns his seat

Councillor Jamie Moran has resigned his seat on Westmeath County Council.

In a post on his Facebook page yesterday, the Athlone man announced that he had resigned with immediate effect.

Cllr Moran, son of former TD and MInister of State Kevin 'Boxer' Moran, was elected in 2019 at the age of 20.

In the post on his page, he said: "It's with a heavy heart I want to let you know that I have resigned from Westmeath County Council with immediate effect. It was a great honour and privilege to serve the people of Athlone and Moate since I was elected.

"My decision for stepping down is due to new work opportunities - it is one that I have not taken lightly and I have given it much thought and reflection.

"I would like to thank all my colleagues and staff members in the council and the outdoor staff. A big thanks to all my friends, supporters and family."

The departure of Cllr Moran leads to speculation that Kevin 'Boxer' Moran might seek to be co-opted to Westmeath County Council in his stead.

Traditionally, the departing politician or his or her party proposes a replacement. For example, when Boxer himself was elected to the Dáil, his seat on the then Athlone Urban Council was taken by his supporter Ailish McManus.

However, it remains to be seen what the view of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, the Green Party, Labour and other councillors on Westmeath County Council would be should Boxer seek the seat.
