School and GAA club pay tributes to late Paddy Traynor of Moylagh

The death has occurred of the former Meath and Moylagh footballer, Paddy Traynor, of Knocklough, Oldcastle, peacefully, at St James' Hospital, Dublin, on Friday.

Moylagh GAA Club has extended sympathy to the Traynor family on the passing of the Club president, saying:" Paddy played a starring role with both Moylagh and Meath during the 1970s. He was a key member of both our Intermediate Championship success and Meath’s National League success in 1975.

"Paddy won two O’Byrne Cups with Meath in 1974 and 1977. With UCD he won a Dublin U21 championship in 1968 and also won two Dublin Intermediate Championships with UCD in 1970 and 1972. He also managed to squeeze in a New York Senior Championship success with Monaghan in 1968.

"Off the GAA pitch Paddy was always a pillar of the community throughout the years having taken a huge interest in the development of the community centre, the establishment of a hugely successful racquet ball club and in more recent years has done marvellous work with the Dromone Development group. Even as recently as this week he has been working to fix floodlights and to get an outdoor defibrillator box put up at the GAA grounds.

"Funnily enough, Carmel was the one with the original interest in photography. Following his retirement from teaching, photography was a passion that Paddy fully embraced. Paddy’s presence at all types of events to capture photographs has been invaluable. He leaves behind a photography library that the national archives would be proud of."

Members of the St Oliver Post Primary School community were shocked and saddened to hear that Paddy Traynor, former teacher, passed away on Friday, said porincipal, Brendan Corcoran.

"A maths, physics and science teacher, Paddy was an influential and respected member of the school community for over 30 years (1977-2008). Following retirement, Paddy continued to contribute to the school community, through his regular visits to photograph various school events. Paddy captured many special moments in the school’s history and for this we are all very grateful.

"A patient, kind and warm man, Paddy was always generous with his time and enjoyed a good catch up. A keen sportsman, he represented Meath and Moylagh GFC with distinction.

"On behalf of St Oliver Post Primary School, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Paddy’s wife Carmel, children Siobhán, Pádraic and Edel, his extended family, friends and loved ones at this difficult time."

Funeral arrangements will be announced later. Family flowers only, donations, in lieu, to the Irish Heart Foundation.
