Additional toilet facilities were provided during the pandemic lockdowns, and additional facilities will be available during the fleadh, the council has confirmed.

Toilet arrangements for Fleadh Cheoil 2022 in hand

Arrangements are already in place to ensure there are going to be sufficient toilets in Mullingar for Fleadh Cheoil 2022, councillors were assured at the March meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad.

The subject was raised by Cllr Andrew Duncan, who asked that the district outline to the members what plans it has to ensure that the increase in sewage demand during the fleadh will not affect water quality in any way.

The official written response from the district executive stated that its water services team is working with the various stakeholders to ensure that water quality is maintained during the festival.

“A private company will be charged with the supply and maintenance of portable loos, which will be stationed around the town,” it stated, going on to explain that the contents of these units will be tankered away for full treatment at a nominated Irish Water facility.

It continued: “The Wastewater Treatment Plant at Clonmore is aware of the upcoming event, and in consultation with Irish Water will devise their own plans to ensure that they can maintain adequate service throughout the duration of the fleadh.

Cllr Duncan said he was aware there had been issues in Cavan when it hosted the fleadh, and he wanted to be sure there would be no problems in Mullingar.

“We should be looking really forward to the fleadh but we certainly don’t want water quality issues because of it,” he said.
