Bring your best moves to Newbury for fleadh fundraising silent disco

A silent disco, or céilí rave, at the Newbury Hotel in Mullingar on Easter Saturday invites everyone to bring their best moves and dancing shoes to hit the floor for an innovative fundraiser for Fleadh Cheoil 2022.

Three DJs will provide music choices – the full Irish, dance classics, and pop anthems – so there will be room for everyone to find their groove.

Doors open at 9pm and tickets will include admission and headphone rental. Early booking is advised as places are limited. Dance offs are optional.

This event is being organised by Sam McGrane and Ronan McQuillan in association with the hotel owners, Garvan McGinley and Mairead Hughes.

“The Fleadh Cheoil event is the world’s largest annual celebration of Irish music, language, song and dance,” Sam told the Westmeath Examiner.

“The town of Mullingar will have seen nothing like this in decades and it could be decades again before we see the influx of people that will descend on the streets of this town.”

Sam said the economic benefit to the region will be significant, but the running costs of the event are millions of euro.

There is great work being done behind the scenes by the committee and chairperson, Joe Connaire, to make the fleadh a success, but more help is needed, he said.

“We want to lend our support in any capacity we can, and so the Newbury Hotel will be donating 100% of the ticket sales to the Fleadh Cheoil committee,” Sam said.

Tickets are €10 each and the Newbury Hotel is covering the cost of equipment hire and DJs.

Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann was first held in 1951, in Mullingar, and now it is coming home to Mullingar from July 31 to August 7 next and everyone is asked to get behind it and make it a truly spectacular and memorable event.
