Three winners for Olympic BC at National Junior Cadets

Olympic Boxing Club, Mullingar had six boxers participating in the recent National Junior Cadet Finals, where winners get selected to represent their country in the European Schoolboys/Girls Championships in Turkey in August.

Olympic BC, Mullingar had three winners: Louise Joyce, winning the Girl 33kg, beating the reigning All-Ireland champion from Belfast; Christian Doyle, winning the 48kg beating the Ulster champion 5-0; and in the 57kg, John Donoghue, who beat the Dublin champion 5-0.

All three boxers are now selected to represent Ireland in the European Schoolboys/girls Championships in August.

Olympic, Mullingar had four other boxers taking part, losing very close contests.

In the 42kg, Oisín Kiernan lost 3-2 in the semi-final to the Ulster champion, who went on to win the competition. In the 44kg, Jason Donoghue lost to a good kid from Mullingar Elite BC, Jason being a year younger than most boxers in the championship.

In the 46kg, Eddie Corcoran lost a very close 3-2 split decision to the Munster champion in the final, while in the 31kg, Calvin Stokes lost a 4-1 split decision to the Antrim champion, in a bout that could have gone either way.

Next up for Olympic Boxing Club, Mullingar is the Monkstown International Box Cup, where they go to defend their title as best boxing club in Ireland, which they won three years ago before Covid intervened.

Olympic BC, Mullingar have won 14 national titles in the year 2022, and 19 for the season. They are the leaders for Best Club in Ireland title for 2022, with a small selection of boxers. It is a brilliant achievement to be leading the race this late in the season.
