Details of Stan's Kilbeggan walking tours confirmed

Stan McCormack has confirmed the details of the walking tour that he announced earlier this year, and it will take place on the following dates:

Friday July 29, on the Green at 7.15pm;

Saturday July 30, on the Green at 7.15pm;

Cemetery Sunday, July 31, on the Green at 5pm, after the ceremony, and on the Green at 7.15pm.

Stan will focus on seven points: 1 The Green, 2 The Crescent, 3 Main Street, 4 The Square, 5 Graveyard Entrance, 6 Distillery, and 7 the GAA.

Further background to Stan's walking tours is here in an article published in May.

An historian with extensive knowledge of the town, Stan says: “All the main events in the history of the town took place on the extended Main Street, and these tours will be about the people of Kilbeggan along the street with many stories to be told about local houses, shops, buildings, people, sport and international stories.

“It will include Kilbeggan Distillery, the 1798 rebellion, the Knighthood story, famous historical figures, from Michael Collins to John Philpott Curran, artists Eileen Coughlan, Liam C Martin, Fiona Kelly, and some of the funny happenings.”

The walking tours are likely to be the last project Stan takes on for Kilbeggan, but as the author of six books and one of the driving forces behind the Knighthood Festival in the town, as well as historical articles in various media, including the Westmeath Examiner (thank you, Stan - editor), he is easing in to retirement.

We at the Examiner wish him well and thank him for his many contributions over the years.
