Council in discussions to secure public access to Clondone Cemetery

Westmeath County Council is in discussions to secure public access to Clondone Cemetery in Delvin.

The land surrounding the council owned Famine graveyard is currently for sale. Cllr Paddy Hill believes that it is important that public access to the site is preserved. In a question submitted to the October meeting of Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District (MKMD), Cllr Hill stated that the graveyard, “which is in a very regrettable condition”, is associated with Delvin Workhouse.

Responding to Cllr Hill's query, the council said that it is “aware of the proposed sale of the lands adjoining Clondone cemetery and has been in contact with the vendor's solicitor to ensure that any right of way to the cemetery is preserved in any sale”.

“In addition, the Heritage Officer is working with the local community to investigate all options for the restoration of this old workhouse cemetery.”
