Maloney and Tynan excel in season's first 18-hole competition

Mullingar Golf Club

Last Sunday saw our first 18 hole competition of this season take place. This 3 club stableford competition was kindly sponsored by McNamee Tyres and over 120 members participated.

On a bright day with the course in excellent condition, some big scores could be expected. Not to disappoint, the overall winner was Dermot Maloney (22) with 37 stableford points, while the gross winner was David Tynan (1) with 29 points. The category winners were as follows: Cat 1 (0-9), Paddy Dunne (5) with 31 points, Cat 2 (10-18), Brain McGinley (13) with 37 points, Cat 3 (19-28), David Keena (28) with 35 points.

The senior winner was Thomas Delaney (16) with 36 points and the junior winner was Aidan Isdell (21) with 32 points. Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to our sponsor McNamee Tyres.

Inter club match play preparation

On Saturday March 4, our Pierce Purcell Cup team were in action in a friendly challenge match against Tulfarris Golf Club. The match finished even with some excellent golf being played by all involved. The experience gained from these matches will undoubtedly be of great benefit to all involved when the real action starts in the next few weeks. With this in mind the draws for the competitions are now available on the Golf Ireland website.

Mary McKenna visit

On Wednesday March 1, the ladies were delighted to see Mary McKenna drop in for a visit. Mary was one of Ireland’s greatest female golfers. She was the winner of 12 domestic championships and a member of nine consecutive Curtis Cup teams.

Beginning her golfing career in 1968, she also captained the Curtis Cup team on two occasions. Mary was awarded an MBE in 2012 for her services to golf.

Junior Captains

Sinead Sweeney and David Trower have been appointed as junior captains 2023. Congratulations to them both - two wonderful ambassadors for our junior golf programme. Wishing them the best for their year ahead.

Heartiest Congratulations to Siofra Murtagh and her husband Darren on the recent arrival of their baby girl Neasa Ita. Sleepless nights will pass but the love of a daughter makes life worth living.

Senior Men’s Competition

On a dry but cold day last Tuesday, 90 competitors participated in the senior men’s competition. This was a great turn out by members and it demonstrates just how popular this competition is, going from strength to strength. The winner on the day this week was Liam Bell (9) with 17 stableford points plus 29 bonus points for a total of 46 points.

Runner up was Jim Curran (7) with 20 stableford points plus 25 bonus points for a total of 45 points. Third overall was John Ahern (10) with 17 stableford points plus 27 bonus points for a total of 44 points. The Super Senior Winner was Donald Bell (6) with 19 stableford points plus 26 bonus points for a total of 45 points, while the Super Super Senior Winner was Cyril Collier (10) with 16 stableford points plus 27 bonus points also for a total of 43 points.

Best golfer on the day was Eamon Shaw (5) with 20 stableford points. Well done to all the winners and all who played on the day.

Next week’s competitions

Next Sunday’s competition is kindly sponsored by the Healy family, with a playing handicap limit of 28 in order to win first prize. Please note that the white tees are in play as are local rules so please repair pitch marks and replace divots.

Captain’s Drive In

Our Captain’s Drive In takes place on March 17 at 1pm.It will be followed by a 9 Hole 4 Person Team event at 1.30pm, with a shot gun start. Two Scores to count on each hole and full playing handicap allowed. Members are requested to note their hole selection when making their booking as this is the hole you will start from on the day. All casual golfers are asked to vacate the course at 11.30am. Entries will become available on the BRS on March 9 at 8pm.

Wednesday Competition

Last Wednesday’s Fourball Betterball competition was played in sunny, dry but very cold conditions and was not for the faint hearted. Playing off 85% handicap and played over 12 holes, 45 teams of two fought hard to win this competition, kindly sponsored by Sherrie Buckley and Aoife Hunt.

Playing superb golf and winners on the day were the duo of Paula Davitt (15) and Marion Bate (15), with a total of 30 stableford points. With a very strong performance and in second place were Jean Bennett (19) and Margaret Eighan (23) also with 30 stableford points.

In third place and in fine form were Mary Taaffe (15) and Barbara Gilmartin (18) with an excellent 28 stableford points. Congratulations to all the winners and well done to all who competed on the day. The 9 hole stableford Competition was won by a very much on form Liz Osborne (28) with 14 stableford points. Congratulations Liz.

Winter League

Tremendous excitement is building up for the final battle of The Winter League 2022-2023 details of which will be announced in the near future. Teams under the captaincy of both Dorothy O’Keeffe and Marion Bate are busy fine tuning their match skills for this highly anticipated League final. It is definitely one not to be missed.

Competition Fixtures March

Wednesday March 8, is a Ladies 15 Hole stableford kindly sponsored by Miriam Finn.

Wednesday March 15 will be a 15 Hole Scramble team of 3, kindly sponsored by Noleen Moloney, Anne Lordan and Sally -Ann O’Donnell. Alternate days Saturday and Sunday preceding the Competition.

Friday March 17, Captain’s Drive In: This will be an exciting event for the whole club with the Captains Drive In taking place at 1pm. Best wishes to lady captain Rosemary, men’s captain Steven and junior captains Sinead and David as they all commence their year.

Interclub Activity

Our team managers are very busy, setting up panels for our various teams with practice sessions and match play games in full swing at the moment. Mullingar ladies will definitely be match fit and ready for action in the upcoming Inter club competitions in 2023.

Short Game practice on Saturday March 4 was the final of these sessions for all who had improved their winning skills of pitching and putting. There were fun competitions on the day. It’s all about the short game.

James, our PRO, is kindly giving us four Saturday morning sessions in April, preparing our Mullingar ladies for the upcoming competitive season. Details will be in ladies branch March Newsletter.
