There was a great reception for Daryl when he got home to Ennell Court today.

Well done Daryl!

Daryl Gahan, 22, returned to Mullingar this week bearing proudly the gold medal he won as a member of the Irish side that came out on top in the soccer championship at the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin.

The fifth of the nine children of Victoria Gahan and John Gahan, of Ennell Court, Man United fan Daryl revelled in the entire experience said his sister Lorraine this week, adding that at the same time, after two weeks away, he was delighted to be coming back home.

Daryl’s coach in Mullingar Shoot ‘n’ Stars, Michael Keenan was thrilled for his protégé, and said that the talent and natural ability that Daryl has were significant assets to the Irish team: tall and very fit, Daryl moves at a speed not always seen in someone of his height and he is dedicated to his sport.

“He has every attribute they could want: he has speed, he has strength, he has shooting accuracy and passing accuracy,” Michael said, adding that Daryl’s brother Jason plays with the Shoot ‘n’ Stars club as well.

Daryl has been playing with Shoot ‘n’ Stars for seven years, and has been on the club’s team who have twice won the Connacht Championship, which is how he came to qualify for the World Games.
