The speed limit changes to 50kmh at this point at Ballagh on the Delvin Road, Mullingar.

Ballagh speed audit found vehicles doing average of 59.5kmh

When council officials in Mullingar had a seven-day speed and traffic audit carried out at Ballagh, where there is a 60kmh speed limit in place, they found vehicles were travelling at an average of 59.5kmh.

“Some motorists did exceed the limits; therefore repeater speed limit signs will be erected,” Cllr Aoife Davitt was told at a meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad, when she asked about the audit.

“I suppose my issue is, how do we manage to help the residents to combat the issue of speed?” Cllr Davitt asked officials, pointing out that since the average speed is 59.5kpmh, it meant some motorists were travelling at well above that.

“What is the actual highest speed value that was clicked on that audit? I’m sure that will give us cause for concern,” she said.

District engineer Pat Kavanagh replied that the highest speed recorded during the audit was 81kmh.

“This has been something that the residents have time and time and time and time again, come back to me on and they wanted to see something happening,” said Cllr Davitt, adding that a lot of people walk that road, and, as well as the speed concerns, they would like to see action on the provision of both footpaths and lighting.
